Essential amino acid
Phenylalanine itself is an essential amino acid. This means that the human organism is not able to synthesize them independently. Instead, he is dependent on a supply from the diet.
Phenylalanine is involved in the synthesis of various neurotransmitters such as dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin.
Different forms of phenylalanine
Phenylalanine comes in three different forms: L-phenylalanine, D-phenylalanine, and DL-phenylalanine (the latter being a combination of the previous two forms). While L-phenylalanine is naturally found in proteins, D-phenylalanine is produced based on the natural model.
