Camu Camu (Myrciaria dubia), a fruit native to the Amazon region in South America, was previously quite unknown, but is now on everyone's lips and both literally and figuratively.
This is a small bitter-tasting berry, which has external resemblance with an apple. Botanically, however, it belongs to a plant species in the family of myrtle (Myrtaceae), which bear fruit all year round. Widespread camu camu is mainly in Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia and northern Brazil.
Ingredients of Camu Camu
The value-giving ingredient of the small berries is Vitamin C, whose content is 30-50 times higher than that of oranges or lemons: 100g of fresh fruit contain on average up to 2000mg of vitamin C, while extracts can contain up to 16g per 100g.
Other ingredients include niacin (vitamin B3), vitamin B1 (thiamin), vitamin B2 (riboflavin), beta-carotene, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, Amino acids and polyphenols such as ellagic acid and OPC.
